He was a United States Army officer cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars. He gained fame from his post war exploits against the Native Americans in the West. Custer was also a genius and he was one of the last one to graduated, which when that happens that usually means you weren't the top one but in Custer case he was very intelligent compared to others.
