From Pacifist to One of the Most Decorated US Soldiers

Alvin Cullum York, also known as Sergeant York, was one of the most decorated United States Army soldiers of World War I. Before joining US soldiers, Alvin C. York was a pacifist and a blacksmith. York once believed that war and violence are unjustifiable. He later received the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking at least one machine gun, killing at least 25 enemy soldiers and capturing 132. He battled in World War I: Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He had six sons and two daughters, Samuel Houston York, Andrew Jackson York, Woodrow Wilson York, George Edward Buxton York, Mary Alice York Franklin, Alvin Cullum York, Jr., Thomas York, and Betsy Ross York Lowery. They were named after American historical figures. He was born on December 13, 1887. He later died at the age of 76 in 1964 due to a hemorrhagic stroke. Alvin York is still considered a United States military hero today.
