The cold war between the Soviet Union and the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, hysteria over the perceived threat posed by Communists in the U.S. became known as the Red Scare. The communists were labeled as “Reds” because of their allegiance to the red flag.

I find it interesting how they would only call them "reds".. Why did they not call them scare as well there full name ???
The Red Scare eventually led to the Cold War which the US and the Soviet Union fought each other without fighting each other physically. It also led to the investigation of many communist activities.
