Joseph Stalin

Joseph Stalin, 1902
Joseph Stalin was a leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from 1922 until 1953. He led the USSR through the Second World War.

Stalin was born as a poor peasant in a Georgian family. As a teenager, he joined the Social Democratic Party, which was a Marxist workers' party. He supported the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and became a part of the Politburo. Stalin served in the Russian Civil War before the Soviet Union was established.

After the establishment of the USSR, Stalin pushed for the establishment and internal fortification of the USSR, in what he thought was accordance with Vladimir Lenin's "Socialism in One Country" theory. Stalin believed that Lenin's theory meant that it was necessary for the USSR to endorse the idea that it was the sole Socialist bulwark standing in Eurasia. Later, Stalin implemented the controversial (but highly effective) Five-Year Plan system, which allowed for agriculture to be collectivized and the Soviet Union to be highly industrialized rapidly.

Stalin led the Soviet Union for almost a decade after the war until his death in 1953.

Stalin promoted himself as the dictator after Lenin's death. His suggested ideal, the Five Year Plan, included the increased production of steel and iron. However, this caused a famine that killed millions because of collectivization.

It's interesting to see how he grew up poor and with few benefits but still was able to come out as a leader and make history.
