Being one of the first US battleships, USS Maine was sent to protect American interest after a Spanish rebellion in Havana. The naval court declared that the explosion was due to a mine, so Congress and the public automatically blamed it on Spain and urge for the declaration of war. With the brutal suppression of Cubans, the Spanish-American War broke out in April 1898.
