USS Maine Explodes

On February 15, 1898, USS Maine was sunk due to an unknown explosion in Cuba's Havana harbor. 260 crew members were killed on board. Being one of the first US battleships, USS Maine was sent to protect American interest after a Spanish rebellion in Havana. The naval court declared that the explosion was due to a mine, so Congress and the public automatically blamed it on Spain and urge for the declaration of war. With the brutal suppression of Cubans, the Spanish-American War broke out in April 1898.

I like how even a small amount of miscalculations during times of tensions can actually lead to war. Sadly the boat just blew up because of it's horrible maintenance and bad quality.
