Carlisle Indian School
The United States Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, generally known as Carlisle Indian Industrial School, was the flagship Indian boarding school in the United States from 1879 through 1918. It was a boarding school. The government paid religious orders to provide basic information to the Native Americans children. The federal government began sending American Indians to off-reservation boarding schools in the 1870s, when the United States was still at war with Indians. An Army officer, Richard Pratt, founded the first of these schools. He based it on an education program he had developed in an Indian prison.

The fact that Americans were in a war with the American Indians insinuates how the conditions must have been for the children attending these schools.
